PRIEST LAKE YACHT CLUB COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES FUND DRIVE RESULTS
November 12, 2009
Brian Elkins
Thanks to Jim Kane (1982 PLYC Commodore) and Missy Hill (1985 PLYC Commodore) for spearheading the PLYC Scholarship Fund Drive this past Labor Day at the annual Gin Fizz gathering at Hill's Resort.
Over $7,000 was raised through pledges with roughly $4,300 having been received thus far into the fund. Those of you that made pledges, but not yet paid, will be forced to walk the plank next Memorial Day! The PLYC Scholarship was started in 2007 where $8,000 was raised the first year. We are happy to report that $7,000 has been awarded in scholarships since 2007 and every student who has applied for a scholarship, has received a $1,000 scholarship. These scholarships are awarded to students within the Priest Lake school district, so these funds support our local high school graduates.
In the Spring of 2008, we had three applicants for the scholarship and this past spring we had four: those recipients were Mary Mann of Nordman, Michael Luckey of Coolin, Jordan Eldore, Priest Lake and Ksenia Wingert, Coolin. When the mother of one of last year's winners called to express her thanks, she started crying when she was describing how she did not know how her family was going to be able to afford the first year's tuition. Here is a small sampling of some of the thank you letters that I've received: "It means a lot to know that the community I was born and raised in is so supportive of youth continuing their education beyond high school. Without that support a college education would be very difficult financially for the most of us." And here's one from a 2008 recipient: "I appreciate the confidence and trust you have in my future education.
The financial aspect of college can be at time overbearing, but with this scholarship many of those burdens will become less substantial. Thank you again for your extreme generosity and trust in my future education and abilities to succeed."
Thanks again to all of you who contribute and support this program. The PLYC Scholarship funds are held in the non-profit Priest Lake PTA. If you have not already done so, please make your contribution now.
